Fall Wine Special: San Polo Rubio 2019

Our fall wine feature is really special… San Polo Rubio 2019 from the Montalcino region of Tuscany. It’s meant to drink young, with its bright, fresh flavors of raspberries and cherries, and a background of well-judged oak and a hint of spiciness. Here Sangiovese, the most important – and often a bit austere – grape variety in Tuscany, meets Merlot and Cabernet Franc. This marriage makes for a wine of great freshness and versatility with a deep ruby red color… thus the name! It is modern and elegant, a wine that will match with any pasta on our menu, even lighter dishes like Linguini Misto Mare or our fall special pasta Cavatappi Zuccati.

The Allegrini family has a long history of making wine in the Veneto region of NE Italy, and established their San Polo winery in Montalcino in 2001 to expand their vineyards and to grow the warmer weather grapes of Tuscany.  Montalcino is a relatively small region (around 3,000 acres) and the complex, high-quality wines of this area have a loyal following.

The San Polo vineyards are all organically farmed.  Years of experimentation and study have allowed the Allegrinis to completely eliminate chemical treatments like fertilizers and pesticides, preferring the exclusive use of totally natural products. This approach, which also includes eliminating weeding, is based on using products of natural origin to encourage the vine’s immune system: aloe vera, algae, calendula, fungus, and plant compounds are just a few examples.  Their state-of-the-art underground cellar is a model of energy-saving sustainability.

The 2019 San Polo Rubio was recently awarded a gold medal at the prestigious Decanter Magazine World Wine Awards, with an outstanding score of 95 points.  We think you’ll agree that it is an absolutely wonderful wine. We’ll all look forward to seeing you soon over a bowl of pasta and a glass of Rubio!
